Boxing News & Rumors: Gennady Golovkin Seen As Floyd Mayweather Jr’s Heir Apparent

A lot of boxing analysts today are banking that Gennady Golovkin is the perfect heir apparent of Floyd Mayweather Jr. when it comes to being the sport's top dog after Money retires.

According to Boxing News 24's Dan Ambrose, Golovkin is more likely to take over Mayweather and even Manny Pacquiao's draw and star power as GGG's "popularity has been skyrocketing" because he has "knocked out 20 fighters in a row."

This was after his sensational flooring of Willie Monroe Jr. just a couple of nights ago. GGG's record improved to 33-0, with 30 knockouts.

Yes, you read it right. 30 knockouts out of 33 fights for an unbelievable 91 percent knockout rate.

His growing fan base in Los Angeles is proof that boxing fans want toe-to-toe action, punch-for-punch rounds, and "big drama show" matches. And that's what Golovkin's style promises to bring into the ring every time.

Matthew Hemmings of Give Me Sport wrote that "Gennady Golovkin is the natural heir to Floyd Mayweather's throne." Hemmings noted that the Kazakhstan-born rising star has an exciting "come forward style" that fans really enjoy and appreciate. He is also a master at cutting the ring to keep his opponent in front of him.

Young-looking and baby-faced, Golovkin has a strong chin that complements his explosive fists. However, since he had only shown one kind of style in all of his fights, one has to wonder what else he can bring to the table if in case he fights someone like, well, Money Mayweather.

HBO has been supporting GGG's campaign so far, so it would not be surprising that he can be the next great PPV superstar. He expressed his interest in fighting Miguel Cotto and Canelo Alvarez next, which would bring him up to the top if he will be successful.

Mayweather is nearing the end of his career. He said it himself after winning his fight against Pacquiao earlier this month. "My last fight is in September," Floyd said as reported by Rick Reeno of Boxing Scene.

If Money's words were true, then boxing will need a new crowd-drawer come October.
