Teen Contestant In 'Turkey's Got Talent' Show Rehearsing At Home Shot In The Head

A 19-year-old woman participating in a national talent TV show in Turkey was shot in the head while she was at home, rehearsing for the said show, BBC News reported, citing local media reports.

Mutlu Kaya, a contestant in "Sesi Cok Guzel," was at her home in the Turkish city of Diyarbakir when a man outside her house shot her in the head. Kaya, who was rushed to a hospital, is still fighting for her life.

BBC News reported that an arrest has been made but local police or media have not released more details about the alleged assailant. It is unclear what is the motive for her attack but BBS reported, citing Turkish paper Posta, that Kaya had received death threat since appearing on the show, something that she was "afraid" of.

The Turkey woman's father Mehmet Kaya said he just wants his daughter to recuperate and that they are expecting local celebrity Sibel Can to help the up-and-coming singer.

Can on May 18 took to Instagram to show her support and worry for her protege. Her translated message reads that she is praying for Kaya, who is in critical condition, and that she is very sad about the news. "My beautiful girl Mutlu, how could they wound you? I am very sad," Can said, according to BBC.

The U.K.'s Daily Mail reported that there are speculations that Kaya's family was not supportive of her decision to join the talent show, the Turkish's version of "U.K.'s Got Talent," in Istanbul. The publication noted that Kaya came from a conservative region in Turkey where society had a very traditional expectation of how women should act.

"For a poor girl living with her family in a run-down one bedroom flat, attracting national media attention could have triggered a fatal conservative social backlash," BBC News analyst Guney Yildiz said.

Yildiz added that it is unsual that Kaya's case has yet to attract social media attention throughout the country.
