Let's Buy the World a Coke: The Truth to The 'Mad Men' Finale

Considered one of the greatest shows on modern TV, "Mad Men" has finally come to a close. And what better way to close it than by showing how Don Draper came up with one of the world's most iconic ads for one of the worlds' most iconic brands.
Well not really. The advertising drama does have a penchant for bending the truth when it comes to the plot, but that in itself lies the quality of research that the showrunners have gone through to create such an elaborate show. The Coke hilltop story is a legend on its own, and is best told by the Coca-Cola Company directly: McCann Erickson creative director for the Coke account Bill Backer was stranded after a heavy London fog forced his plane to land in Shannon, Ireland. In the airport café, he saw irate passengers were laughing and sharing stories over some snack and some Coke. "Let's have a Coke" was the common theme, and shared this to the music director and the two composers, made a few tweaks and the rest, as they say, is history.

This is pretty common knowledge, with the information readily available on the website of the company, but that didn't stop the series to bend it a little, and have a little over three million live viewers for the finale alone, which The Hollywood Reporter calls a series high and the best among the adult demographic 25-54.
Thought the series finale did not receive the ratings its contemporaries receive like "The Sopranos" or "Breaking Bad," whom The Wall Street Journal lists as having 11.9 million and 10.3 million same-day viewers respectively, the show definitely ended on a high note. It will be a pretty long time before anything can replace something like "Mad Men," and the likes of Don Draper, Peggy Olson, Pete Campbell, Joan Harris and Roger Sterling will all be missed.
