L.A. Reid, Mariah Carey's boss, is apparently not confident in Carey's latest single, "Infinity."

The 45-year old diva took the stage for the first time in a long time to perform her hit "Vision of Love" and her brand new song at this year's 2015 Billboard Music Awards on Sunday. Her label boss has already expressed his skepticism about the possible success of "Infinity."

The CEO and chairman of Epic Records, who recently sat down for an interview with Billboard magazine, did not speak highly of the "We Belong Together" singer, as well as other artists who are already considered "music legends."

Reid harshly told the publication that Carey should be content and proud to hear herself on the radio, as to be heard at this point in her career is already a big accomplishment. "Radio does not cater to legends or veteran artists," he said. "It caters to in-the-moment stars."

Aside from Carey, the 58-year old record producer frankly said other musicians face just as much difficulty as her and explained that no artist who released records 25 years ago is ever going to have another number 1 hit. According to him, not even Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, Bruce Springsteen, Prince or Keith Richards.

"So if Mariah can get on the radio, we have done damn good," he said. And although they would like to have a number one, he got real and honestly told the magazine that "it is not realistic."

Carey has rejoined Epic Records in March after having worked for a while with Def Jam records.

Not long after she reunited with her previous record label, she released an album of her greatest hits and launched her residency in Las Vegas at Caesars Palace.

Though Reid's honesty might have come across as harsh, it's also probably the reason why Carey decided to work with him again. Talking to the L.A. Times, Carey explained why she returned to Reid and said that she did not like being somewhere where it didn't feel like family.

"You have to have people who really care about you as an artist," she remarked. And Reid's candidness is probably his way of caring about his artists, as Carey said that it's "what you get with him."
