Chinese Basketball News: ‘China’s Cuban’ Wang Xingjiang, US Player Marcus Williams Lead New Basketball Team For Chinese Minor League

Some things are really meant to be.

For former CBA Shanxi Brave Dragons team owner Wang Xingjiang and American basketball player Marcus Williams, leading a basketball team together had been a common passion in the past years.

Now they get to live it once more as Wang and Williams reunite in forming a new team, the Zhengzhou Dayun, for China's National Basketball League, according to Yibada's EL Borromeo.

Wang, dubbed as "China's Cuban" because of his uncanny resemblance to NBA's Dallas Mavericks top brass Mark Cuban, was the former boss of the Shanxi team in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA). He sold his team in November 2013 due to "personal financial problems and the ongoing pressure of having to support a team that operates annually at a loss," as reported by NiuBBall's Jon Pastuszek.

Meanwhile, the 28-year-old Williams, a former Arizona Wildcats standout and NBA journeyman, joined his former boss in an attempt to take Zhengzhou Dayun to the championship of China's minor professional basketball league.

In 2012, Williams led Wang's Brave Dragons to a third-place finish in the CBA, which is so far the best season for the Shanxi franchise.

"He is really a good friend, and I really like him. I missed him when he sold the team two years ago," Williams said, referring to Wang, who is also fondly called "Boss Wang" inside his organization. "I did not want to play for any other team in NBL but his team, it's been great to see him," Williams added.

Wang has been absent in Chinese basketball circles ever since the Brave Dragons' sale was completed in November 2013. Williams, on the other hand, was also not active since 2014, as he went home to the United States to take care of his family and a second baby, as per China Development Gateway's website.

The former San Antonio Spurs and L.A. Clippers guard-forward was banned for six months by the CBA in January 2013 after testing positive for doping. However, he came back to play for the Brave Dragons in November 2013.

Williams reportedly received a contract from the Denver Nuggets to play for the NBA's 2014-2015 season, but he was waived before the actual season started. Wang invited him back to China this month and he immediately accepted the invitation for the opportunity to once again play for his former boss.
