Having a drone is considered as prestige to many Americans and folks in other countries across the world. However, what happens when drones lose control and fall from the sky? That's where the Smart Parachute comes into play.
SmartChutes has begun a Kickstarter campaign to get a new and exciting product into the realm of consumer spending. The product is designed for drone owners who care about their drones too much to watch it fall into the sea or in the middle of a busy street.

SmartChutes creator, Michael Pick, noted that the first time he flew a quadcopter, he didn't feel good inside to send such an expensive piece of machinery into the air. This is the reason he chose to design SmartChutes, the first Smart Parachute for drones.
It is unlike anything we have ever seen before outside of the military.
We understand the parachute is 36-inches in length, which is quite large. It has a 4-inch sensor, and the whole equipment can be attached to a quadcopter. Still, we have to wonder if it can be fitted on all quadcopters, or will SmartChutes have a custom design system for quadcopters that have unusual designs.
While we can't tell if it can fit on an unusually designed quadcopter, we do know that the weight of the copter needs to be around 4-pounds or less. Furthermore, the sensor takes around 15-seconds to prime, and it works from its own power source. The system also comes with an accelerometer and a gyroscope, so it can pick up on certain movements such as free-fall, flips, and 90-degree tilt.
Whenever a disastrous maneuver is made, the sensor sends a signal to the canister to release the parachute.
While we like the idea, we have to wonder if the system is smart enough to tell when a drone is being flown recklessly by the owner and is not in any immediate danger of being sent to the ground. It will be a shame if the parachute kicks in just because the pilot took evasive maneuvers or if he or she is just having fun.
At the end of the day, SmartChute is a decent enough piece of tech, and we'd love to see it in action.
