Square Enix Reveals 'Dissidia Final Fantasy' Main Characters; No Villains?

Square Enix finally unveiled the first trailer for its upcoming PS4 release: "Dissidia: Final Fantasy." Like its predecessor arcade game, released exclusively for the PSP, the game pits the main characters and villains from most of the FF games against each other.

Unlike the previous title, though, the new "Dissidia" features three-on-three battles which is quite reminiscent of the battle mode made popular by the oldest "Final Fantasy" titles. A new feature is the Summon system, wherein any one of the three-character team could summon a spectral beast to fight for or with them. The trailer shows Ifrit, a popular fire elemental that appeared in various FF titles.

The trailer shed some light as to the characters' skills. FF's Warrior of Light and FFVII's Cloud Strife, for instance, are heavy attackers, whereas FFVI's Terra and FFXIII's Lightning are ranged shooters.

One thing that is evident in the trailer, though, is the lack of villains. "Final Fantasy" has some of the most popular video game villains, with some even eclipsing the fame and prestige of their titles' heroes.

Villains like Sephiroth, Kefka, and Garland have put terror into the hearts of "Final Fantasy" gamers. They have been the plague on the forces of good wherever they show up. But what exactly is it about "Final Fantasy" villains that make them such memorable avatars of evil?

Ambition

While many Final Fantasy villains have self-serving ambitions like vengeance or world domination, FFV's sentient, superintelligent tree Exdeath takes it to a whole new level. In the previous "Dissidia" titles, Exdeath constantly boasts about his plans to turn the world and the universe back into the void, to a state of eternal nonexistence.

Style

Final Fantasy villains are more than just about evil, they are also endlessly classy. Everything from Kefka's flashy clown getup to Sephiroth's cool trenchcoat just screams badass style. The gear also helps them spread terror.

Humanity

A good villain needs to have a tragic backstory to be truly relatable. FFIX's Kuja is terrible not just because his heart is pure evil - it isn't. Abandoned soon after his creation, Kuja sought to find the "brother" that his father chose over him.
