Renowned Italian Tenor Carlo Bergonzi Dead at 90

The Italian Auxologic Institute in Milan confirmed the death of the famous Italian tenor Carlo Bergonzi on Monday, July 28 this year, reporting that he passed away on Friday, but the cause of death was not given. Carlo Bergonzi was 90 years old.

Carlo Bergonzi is considered as one of the most respected interpreters of Verdi operas during his career of 40 years. The famous tenor made his debut at La Scala in Milan in 1953. His international success was marked by his performance at the Metropolitan Opera in New York when he played the role of Radames in 'Aida,' another one of Verdi's works.

He was commended for his beautiful voice and it had been captured in numerous recordings including a major operatic aria by Verdi in 1976. He was regularly performing and after 22 roles, he retired in 1995.

After his retirement, he concentrated on being a teacher. He has also hosted Verdi singing contests, managed his own hotel called the 'I due Foscari' in Busseto.

In 2000, at the age of 75, it was announced that he was taking on the challenging role in a concert called Otello. However, the tenor backed out of the performance and was replaced by his understudy.

The tenor was praised by Gramophone magazine, commending him for his 'power and longevity,' adding that it was "never at the expense of a sweet legato line, near-perfect diction and beauty of sound".

In the past, he made his debut as a baritone, but eventually his discovered that his vocal prowess belonged to tenor. Unfortunately, there were no recordings of his voice when he was still singing as a baritone.

The tenor died on July 25, 2014 at the Auxologico Institution in Milan where he was hospitalized for causes not released to the press. The tenor's remains is said to be buried in Vidalenzo cemetery in Polesine which is his birthplace.
