Sepp Blatter Retains Post As FIFA President

(Photo : YouTube) Sepp Blatter was reelected as FIFA president after his sole opponent backed down.

Despite facing allegations over corruption, Sepp Blatter was re-elected as FIFA president after his only opponent conceded on Friday.

Blatter's reign as FIFA manager has been marred by controversies of corruption and bribery. The Swiss football administrator has been investigated by the United States and Switzerland law enforcement agencies regarding corruption accusations. Blatter's tenure as FIFA president has been marred by various corruption allegations as well as controversies.

In order to be selected as the FIFA president, aspirants has to gain at least two thirds of vote in the first round of the voting stage, according to Reuters.  Neither Blatter nor his opponent, Jordanian Prince Ali bin Al Hussein, manage to secure such voting percentage.

During the first voting round, Blatter received 133 votes while Prince Ali only scored 73. The prince later conceded due to undisclosed reasons.

Blatter, who first joined the organization in 1975, expressed his jubilation during his victory speech by an outcry of, "Let's go FIFA, let's go FIFA." Blatter received a standing ovation after his speech.

Investigations around alleged bribery and corruption that has tainted FIFA's 111-year existence has led to the arrest of seven individuals, according to The Guardian.

Blatter's recent victory will no doubt add to the escalating tension regarding world football. UEFA president Michel Platini, together with its 53 members, has already declared that they will not support Blatter's reign. To make matters worse, FA Cup chairman Greg Dyke also declared that England will boycott the World Cup as long as other European nations will rally to their side.

The recent election for a new FIFA president was meet by protest and several civil disturbance. The vote was interrupted when protesters from Palestine protesters started shouting "Red card for FIFA."

According to BBC, Blatter has faced several plea to abandon his post. Several high profile individuals, including United Kingdom Prime Minister David Cameron, has joined the bandwagon urging Blatter to leave his post.
