Liu Zhijun, China’s former railway minister, sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve

July 8th, Beijing No. 2 Intermediate People's Court announced Liu Zhijun a suspended death sentence for corruption and abuse of power, with a two-year reprieve, deprival of political rights for life, and confiscation of all personal property.

Beijing No. 2 Intermediate People's Court found out after investigation, from 1986 to 2011, Liu Zhijun used his position of influence to help about 11 business associates win promotions and project contracts and accepted 64.6 million Chinese yuan ($10.5 million) in unspecified bribes. During the period Liu Zhijun served as China's Minister of Railways, he helped Ding Yuxin and her relatives win cargo transportation contracts and railway construction contracts. He also helped them in the acquisition of shares in a bullet train wheel set company, and with enterprise financing, by breaking regulations and applying favoritism, which allowed Ding Yuxin and her family to reap huge profits and inflicted colossal losses in the public assets, violating rights and interests of the state and the people.

According to Beijing No. 2 Intermediate People's Court, prosecutors accused Liu Zhijun of involving especially huge amount of money with especially serious circumstances, and his crime of abuse of power had caused colossal losses in the public assets, violating rights and interests of the state and the people. The court convicted Liu Zhijun of all offences. He should be punished by law. However, as there were circumstances that may warrant a lighter punishment, the court decided to hand down a sentence of a death penalty with a two-year reprieve. As Liu confessed his crime, including some acts of bribe-taking that were unknown to investigators. Prosecutors and Liu's defense counsel had stated in the trial that according to relevant laws, such facts might warrant leniency. Based on all the circumstances and consequences, Beijing No. 2 Intermediate People's Court holds the above execution on Liu Zhijun trial.
