The cover was headlined "Call Me Caitlyn," and as soon as it came out, it became a social media sensation, according to The New York Times.

On Monday, Vanity Fair announced its latest cover via Twitter, starring Caitlyn. The magazine's tweet has been retweeted over 35,000 times in under 40 minutes.

The Bruce that the world once knew spoke to Diane Sawyer in April revealing her transition into becoming a woman. The television special quickly garnered nearly 17 million viewers as Bruce said he had the "soul of a female." Now it appears Caitlyn is drawing the attention of even more people. The Vanity Fair cover was met with much applause, with social media users using the hashtag #CallMeCaitlyn.

Even celebrities are welcoming Caitlyn into the world and are inspired by her coming out.

Sarah Kate Ellis, GLAAD's president and chief executive officer, had nothing but praise for the cover.

"By sharing her journey with the world, Caitlyn Jenner is accelerating acceptance of transgender people everywhere and reminds us all how important it is to live as your most authentic self," said Ellis in a statement.

Jenner's cover had been shot in her Malibu home by famed photographer Annie Leibovitz. The article on Caitlyn was written by Buzz Bissinger, the author of "Friday Night Light."

Jenner speaks movingly about her journey, telling Bissinger, "If I was lying on my deathbed and I had kept this secret and never ever did anything about it, I would be lying there saying, 'You just blew your entire life,'" as stated in Vanity Fair's Web site.

Caitlyn, 65, had a long life under the eyes of the public ever since she won an Olympic gold medal in the '70s. As Bruce, she appeared on the cover of Playgirl, and she became an author, an actor, and for the most part of her adult life in the reality series "Keeping Up with the Kardashians," the family's patriarch.

It was only in early 2015 that reports began emerging that Bruce, the former Caitlyn, was becoming a woman, when in fact she began transition since the 1980s. The Vanity Fair article said it all started after Bruce won the gold medal at the 1976 Montreal Olympics.

Bruce shared that she would wear pantyhose and a bra underneath her suit while she traveled across the US to make speeches and star in commercials. She stopped, however, in fear of getting criticized by the public.

She added that her transition started again when she ended her marriage to the KUWTK matriarch, Kris Jenner.

Last week, Bruce was seen with dyed blonde hair, reported Mirror. In a KUWTK special on Bruce, Kim even helped Bruce with Caitlyn's wardrobe.

Caitlyn's transition was reportedly carefully calibrated by Jenner and her team, especially as her new show on E! is set to debut by the end of July. The show will feature her life in public as a woman.

Meanwhile, to keep up with her first public appearance on Vanity Fair, Caitlyn Jenner released her own Twitter account at the same time.

The account quickly garnered more than 1.1 million followers the moment it went public. The amount of followers it got in just four hours and three minutes is even in the Guinness World Record time, according to CNN. A Vanity Fair spokeswoman said the team following the scoop had gone through extraordinary lengths just to keep the story a secret. There were only a selected number of people who knew about it inside the publication. The team kept the story inside a computer not connected to the magazine's server, and they kept it locked in an office. During the photo shoot and in the plant where the magazine had been printed, security was tight.

Caitlyn's family, the Jenners as well as the Kardashians, have been all out in their support of her transition. Khloe Kardashian showed her support through Instagram.

Khloe was the first from the Kardashians to acknowledge and share Caitlyn's Vanity Fair photo. Kendall Jenner, Caitlyn's oldest daughter with Kris Jenner, shared behind-the-scenes footage from the shoot. "As soon as the Vanity Fair cover comes out, I'm free," Jenner can be heard saying in the video.
