As reported by China Daily, a survey was done among 170 thousand people. Among those who answered the survey, 91% claim they have noticed rude or uncivilized behavior among tourists, while a measly 9% have not noticed such behavior. The remaining 4,500 of those who answered the survey claim they know not what "uncivilized tourist behavior" is.
So what exactly are the top 10 tourist behaviors deemed as "uncivilized?" Ranking at number one is, littering. In Singapore alone, littering would cost one a hefty fee. In China and some parts of the world, there is no fee to pay when one litters. Ranking second is picking flowers, climbing trees, and stepping on grass.
Ranking at third and fourth place is damaging public amenities and breaking order in public, respectively. Spitting in public ranks at number five, while climbing onto historical relics to get a good photo ranks at number six.
In at number seven is vandalizing tourist attractions. On the other hand, not flushing the toilet and smoking in areas where it is prohibited falls at number eight and nine spot respectively. At the last spot is breaking rules in traffic or parking in areas where it is deemed illegal.
On the other hand, the China National Tourism Administration is observing their own citizens when it comes to their travels abroad. Unruly citizens of China who have been behaving badly across foreign countries will be returned to China.
"Objectively speaking, our tourists have relatively low-civilized characters," said Liu Simin in a report by Reuters. Simin is a researcher based in the Tourism Research Centre of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
"Overseas travel is a new luxury, Chinese who can afford it compare with each other and want to show off," added Lui. "Many Chinese tourists are just going abroad, and are often inexperienced and unfamiliar with overseas rules and norms."
