The survey sampled the opinions of about 521 Chinese male and female professionals about their views on the matter.  The answers obtained from the women proved quite interesting.

Around 7 percent of the women interviewed aged 25 and below believe that they are at a disadvantage as compared to men their age.  But for women, who are in the 26 and 40 age bracket, that number increases to 29 percent.  The number increases further to 35 percent by the time a woman reaches the age of 41.

The poll was conducted in various sectors that include services, mining, distribution and transport.  Many male and female professionals in the service sectors believe that there is an imbalance of career advancement and salary between the genders.

Generally, most of the men who took part in the survey do not believe that such inequality exists.  Men, who think women are at a disadvantage in the work place, are in the minority at 13 percent.

According to The Conversation, the salary of an average female worker in the city is only 69 percent of what man can receive.  The article claims that many of the women in the service sector are assigned to menial and low paying jobs.  Nonetheless, Chinese female professionals have more chances of advancement than their counterparts in many parts of the world.

Hays Asian Director Christine Wright believes that China's desperate need for skilled professionals mean that employers cannot afford to be too selective with regards to gender.

The Hays survey also revealed that many Chinese firms claim they are implementing policies that will equalize the opportunity between genders.

Chinese lawmakers are recognizing the need to level the playing field for the female workforce.  China Daily quotes National People's Congress (NPC) Deputy Dong Mingzhu, who said that the government will help women in their careers since more jobs in the country now depends on knowledge rather than physical labor.
