Ariana Grande knows how complicated family relationships can be.
The 21-year old singer and actress revealed that one of the hardest things she has ever done was to sever ties with her father, Edward Butera. She made the confession during her interview for Seventeen magazine's September issue.

Grande admitted that the reason for her wanting to keep her father away was private and that it took a long time before she was okay with her decision.
But she still loves him, like most daughters do their fathers despite personal issues. "I am made up of half my dad, and a lot of my traits come from him," she shared.
Being her father's daughter was something she didn't like about herself as well. Knowing that a large part of who she is comes from who he is took a while to accept. However, "I had to accept that it's okay not to get along with somebody and still love them," she shared.
The said interview was conducted before her grandfather, who she was very close to, passed away from cancer last July 22. Grande shared that although her song "Problem" is blowing the charts, all she could think about was her grandfather.
Insecurities are still part of the singer's daily struggles, but she tries to put everything in perspective and focus on the important things in life. However, being the age she is, she shared that it is difficult because "everyone strives for approval and wants to feel loved."
Criticisms used to bring her down and family turmoil had always been a difficult topic to tackle; but after all the things she has been through and all the personal demons she has had to overcome, Grande finally feels free. Now, she said, "I feel like for the first time in my life, I'm really OK."
