Girl Hit By Plane On Venice Beach Dies

Oceana Irrizary, the 9-year-old girl who was hit by a small plane that was making an emergency landing on a Florida beach, has died.

Oceana was brought to hospital in critical condition after the accident on Sunday. She died Tuesday at All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg.

Oceana and her dad, Army Sgt. 1st Class Ommy Irizzary, were walking along the Caspersen Beach in Venice, Florida when they were hit by a small plane as it was making an emergency landing on the beach.  Ommy died on the scene.

The Irizarrys from Fort Stewart, Georgia, was on a vacation celebrating the Irizarry couple's 9th wedding anniversary when the tragedy happened.

On the day of the crash, Ommy posted family pictures on Facebook with loving messages to his wife. It was the couple's 9th wedding anniversary.

"Today, 9 years ago, I tied my life to my beautiful wife, Rebecca Irizarry," the soldier posted. "Thank you for being with me through thick and thin. I love you with all my heart, mi Roma. I am very happy and can't wait to see what the next 100 have in store for us. I love you, Becci."

Ommy Irizarry, a  Puerto Rican, joined the Army in 2002 and was twice deployed to Iraq, a Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield spokesman said. He moved to Fort Stewart in 2010.

Moments before Sunday's crash-landing, the small plane's pilot radioed Venice Airport to say he was going to try to land on Caspersen Beach as his 1972 Piper Cherokee was in trouble and couldn't make it to the nearest airport.

Airport officials notified the sheriff's office about the emergency beach landing but the radio call and the actual landing happened in quick succession.

Wendy Rose, the sheriff's information officer, said the pilot put down the plane "at the end of the water, at the end of the sand."

Witnesses said the plane landed quietly but hit the father and daughter while the pilot and his passenger were not hurt.

The crash is being investigated by the Federal Aviation and Administration while the deaths are being probed by the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office.
