With the latest innovations in technology around the globe, one stands out because of its practicality and efficiency. Scientists recently discovered that WiFi can be an alternative power provider for cameras that have no batteries.
According to The Indian Express, a camera without a battery can be powered by WiFi up to 5 meters in distance, a reality that boosts the idea of "Internet of Things." Studies under the "Internet of Things" aim to make objects available to provide data and information, regardless of their location, through a special chip that is strategically connected to them. The predicament, however, is that scientists will have to figure out how to keep these chips powered and energized.

Vamsi Talla, from the University of Washington in Seattle, along with other colleagues, discovered that WiFi signals have the ability to send and emanate power on distant objects. The spread of the radio broadcast is then picked up by an antennae and converts it to energy. With the production of energy, the team concluded that the energy can also be stored in a temp sensor and install near a WiFi router. Researchers said that, "The battery - free camera can operate up to about five meters from the router, with an image capture after every 35 minutes."
In an article by Technology Review, the demonstration of the first ever surveillance camera powered by WiFi has been so significant that the idea of assuming the "Internet of Things" is coming to life is very possible. A glitch in the project showed how WiFi signals sometimes fail to produce consistent signals that causes the voltage to power down, if not stop. The team of Talla was able to recognize this problem and formulated a plan to program a specific router to emanate sounds, in the event that inconsistency in signals are detected.
As the researched progresses, the team included a rechargeable battery to lengthen the scope of the WiFi up to 7 meters long. The strength of the WiFi's power supply can pass through brick walls, giving the possibility of installing the camera outside while keeping the device safely intact inside the house.
