Tomlinson, who is the league's fifth all-time leading rusher with 13,684 yards, is one of only four Charger players to have their jersey numbers retired by the team. The other three are Dan Fouts, Lance Alworth, and the late Junior Seau.
He will also be the 38th Chargers Hall of Famer whose name will be put on the team's Ring of Honor.
The ceremony will be held at San Diego's Qualcomm Stadium during the halftime of the team's Week 14 Sunday night football game against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Chairman Dean Spanos stated in a press release that "LT" was the team's "heart and soul" during one of the most successful periods in Chargers history and that there only a few players that have "meant more" to the franchise than the former Texas Christian standout. (Source: ESPN)
Tomlinson, who is now an NFL Media analyst, spent nine of his 11 seasons in the league playing for the Chargers, with the final two suiting up for the New York Jets. He was still effective with the Jets, but his most productive years were all harnessed in San Diego.
The Texas native was an NFL MVP, five-time Pro Bowl player, three-time First Team All-Pro, and three-time Second Team All-Pro during that magnificent stretch from 2002 to 2007. The string of successful seasons was capped by the MVP award in 2006, wherein he ran 1,815 yards for an NFL record of 28 touchdowns. That year he also caught three touchdown passes and passed off for two to make it 33 in total. He scored 153 of his 169 career touchdowns for the Chargers.
Tomlinson was San Diego's fifth overall pick during the 2001 NFL Draft. He had been consistent in all the nine years he played with the Chargers, garnering at least 300 attempts, 1,200 rushing yards, and 10 rushing touchdowns in his first seven seasons. (Source: Bleacher Report)
During the start of his eighth season, at age 30, the 5-foot-10 215-pound running back's numbers started to fall. Eventually, the Chargers let him go in February 2010 entering his tenth season. In March 2010, the Jets signed him for a two-year contract worth $5.2 million.
