New Jersey Teen Pleads Guilty in World Trade Center Climb

A New Jersey daredevil, who was charged with a misdemeanor after he snuck to the top of the 104-story 1 World Trade Center tower in New York, pled guilty to the charges on Wednesday.

The 16-year-old Filipino-American, Justin Casquejo, admitted to breaching a misdemeanor law in the city in exchange for a young offender status, instead of facing a BASE jumping charge constituting 23 days of community service.

According to NBC New York, BASE jumping means to parachute off a tall structure or a cliff instead of from an airplane.

Though he did not jump off the tallest tower in the city, the young daredevil still faces charges in association with the activity.

Originally, Casquejo was charged with two counts of trespassing by the Manhattan District Attorney's Office.

Pamela Griffith, Casquejo's lawyer, declined to comment on his plea. The teenager is set to be sentenced in September.

The young climbing enthusiast slipped through a small hole in the construction fence in the early hours of March 16 and climbed to the top of the tower using a ladder, scaffolding, and elevators. Authorities stated that he managed to bypass a distracted security guard during his ascent to the top.

After reaching the 88th floor, he climbed to the building's antenna which rises almost 2,000 feet above the ground.

Two hours later, police, together with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the agency who owns the building, arrived inside and took him into custody.

More than 200 police officers from the NYPD guard the 16-acre perimeter of the iconic building while Port Authority police and private security personnel protect it from inside. There are also numerous surveillance cameras recording every space in the area.

Despite this, a teenager and four men, who turned themselves in for planning a parachute jump from the symbolic building a few days after Casquejo's arrest, were able to find holes in the security system.

These breaches of the skyscraper's security have raised concerns regarding the safekeeping of the nation's tallest building.

The Port Authority assured Reuters that they take security breaches very seriously.
