Officers from Iowa State Patrol and the Scott County Sheriff's office reportedly made the arrest at an Interstate 80 traffic stop.
According to witnesses, the shooting began around 7:30 p.m. at the mall's food court. They heard several shots and the shooter was seen fleeing the scene following the crime.
No details about the victim or the shooter have been released, according to DPS spokesman Alex Murphy. The victim's identity has been suspended awaiting family notification.
He added that there are no additional suspects and that the public is now safe from danger, according to the Associated Press.
The Iowa mall shooting resulted in some shoppers rushing out of the establishment. Others on the other hand had to hide inside the mall until the threat was cleared.
There are no details about the suspect's motive for the shooting as of the current moment, but according to mall worker Ryan Ross, he knew the shooter. He said that the shooter had been a mid-20s mid-20s in the mall who had been terminated earlier that day, according to USA Today.
"He made eye contact with me, I saw the gun and he sprinted off" down the main corridor of the mall, Ross said.

A shopper named Jeff Carew said he had been near the victim when the Iowa mall shooting took place. He said the victim appeared to be around 17 or 18 years old.
"I heard three shots and watched the girl fall," he said. He said that the girl had been shot in the back, adding that the shooter appeared to be a young male wearing a black hat and vest.
Alex Halter from Iowa confirmed Carew's statement, saying that he saw the victim and she was a teenager.
"I was heading toward the food court and heard three gunshots and in 10 seconds everyone was running," said Halter.
A 22-year-old named Chizom Ekpunobi who went to see a movie at Coral Ridge Cinema said she was approaching the food court when the shooting occurred.
"They rung out. We heard a couple of shots. At first we thought it was fireworks or the mall falling apart and when we realized what had happened and saw everyone else running out of the mall, we didn't stop to think. We just followed," Ekpunobi said.
