Last week, Huawei and China Mobile deployed their 4G LTE tower at the Mount Everest base camp, located at an altitude of 5200 meters above sea level. The 4G LTE tower adopted the newest modern LTE TDD technology, and this is also the first and highest 4G LTE tower located in the Everest area.
TD-LTE is short for Long-Term Evolution Time-Division Duplex, which is a 4G mobile-telecommunications technology. It is one of two variants of the 3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology, the other being Frequency-Division Long-Term Evolution (FD-LTE or LTE FDD).
David Wang, President of Huawei Wireless Networks, said the arrival of 4G connectivity tower at Mount Everest is an very important milestone in the development of the technology. He added: "We are very excited to make this possible and look forward to working with more operators worldwide to bring high-speed mobile broadband services anytime and anywhere."
Mount Everest is the Earth's highest mountain, with a peak at 8,848 meters above sea level. It is located in the Mahalangur section of the Himalayas. The international border between China and Nepal runs across the precise summit point. Previously, it was reported there was a climbing enthusiast who used a HTC One smart phone to upload a video through satellite signal, when he climbed on the top of Mount Everest. If 4G Network can cover the mountain in the future, it will be more convenient for the climbers to use cellphone on Mount Everest, and also cut the costs of their phones.
