The newly-released film "Jurassic World" has quickly beat 2012's "Marvel's The Avengers" as the highest-grossing opening weekend of all time in Hollywood's record books. In its first weekend at North America's box office, the film easily raked in $208.8 million, which is 2 percent more than what was estimated on Sunday, Universal Pictures said Monday.

"Marvel's The Avengers" previously held the record for highest-grossing opening weekend in 2012, scooping over $207.4 million during its first weekend.

Expectations for the Marvel film "Avengers: Age of Ultron" sequel last month disappointed after managing $191.3 million during its debut week. However, it ranked above "Iron Man 3″ which raked in $174.3 million on the all-time list, reported The Washington Post.

"Jurassic World" grossed $315.3 million and its international total went over and above to a record of $524.1 million, according to The Associated Press.

This makes the film also the first ever to cross the half-billion-dollar mark in its first weekend worldwide. Trailing behind it is "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" with $483 million in the opening weekend, which opened in 66 countries and grossed up to $100 million in China, while globally it topped at $524 million.

"This is absolutely a four-quadrant movie and is working on so many levels," domestic distribution head honcho Nick Carpou of Universal told the Hollywood Reporter of the "Jurassic World" release.

Carpou also mentioned the film's release date, praising its timing as having perfectly played out with the summer season.

Chris Pratt plays the lead role in the fourth installment and relative newcomer Colin Trevorrow directed the popular series. Steven Spielberg was executive producer.

The making and marketing of "Jurassic World" cost $300 million in estimates, with Legendary Pictures funding around 20 percent of the budget for production, according to The New York Times.

"Jurassic World" is the most recent success in a string of Universal's wins this 2015, some of which include "Furious 7″, "Fifty Shades of Grey", and "Pitch Perfect 2."

According to Rentrak analyst Paul Dergarabedian, the chatter circulating around the film is what "inspires people to go to the movie theatre."

"Everybody gets caught up in it," he added.
