Shelby police reportedly caught up to the church shooting suspect following a motorist's tip. Police took Rood 250 miles away from the area of the arrest, but he has since been transferred to South Carolina, according to ABC News.
Roof will later be charged with one count of murder for the legal process to begin. Additional charges will be held against Roof later on, according to the local prosecutor's office.
Before a bail hearing at the Al Cannon Detention Center in North Charleston Friday, he was expected to be placed under protective custody, according to Spokesman Eric Watson for the Charleston County Sheriff's office.
Watson added that the SC church shooting suspect will now be placed on suicide watch, as dictated by jail protocols.
Roof will also not have any contact with the general population inside the jail for safety purposes.
On Friday afternoon, Roof's first hearing was expected. Several weeks later, another hearing is also expected.
According to South Carolina law, the SC church shooting suspect would not be receiving any bond.
The case is expected to last between six months to three years if Roof pleads guilty or if death penalty would be pursued, said experts.
It remains unclear whether Roof has a lawyer.
Meanwhile, the 51-year-old motorist who tipped police of the suspect, Debbie Dills, said seeing Roof had been a work of God, according to CNN.
Dills said she had been driving along the highway around 10:30 a.m. Thursday when she saw the SC church shooting gunman driving toward Kings Mountain.
She called police and followed Roof for more than 30 miles before Shelby police caught up with the suspect. They took him to custody after they pulled him over.
The SC church shooting took place during a bible study at the historic Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church Wednesday night. The incident has since shaken the city which has reportedly been struggling with race issues.
The church's pastor, who was also a well-known state senator, Rev. Clementa C. Pinckney, was killed in the SC church shooting, reported The New York Times.
According to witnesses, the SC church shooting gunman had asked who the pastor is upon entrance to the church. He even sat next to Pinckney during the Bible study before he opened fire.
The church where the SC church shooting took place is the oldest black congregation located south of Baltimore. According to the website of the National Park Service, the church is the oldest A.M.E. church in the South, with congregations dating back to before 1820.
