The crime drama "12 Citizens" directed by Chinese director Xu Ang took home five awards for the Movie Channel Media Awards category at the 2015 Shanghai Film Festival.

The five awards include "Best Film," "Best Director," "Best Screenplay," "Best Actor" and "Best Supporting Actor."

Han Tongsheng won "Best Supporting Actor," while He Bing took home "Best Actor."

"12 Citizens has 12 actors playing together. Today Han Tongsheng and I are here to receive the awards," said Bing while accepting the award.

"But other 10 actors are scattered around the world, striving for their livelihoods and dreams. Brothers, Han and I are actually on behalf of you to receive a collective acting award. We miss you," he continued.

Inspired by the 1957 classic Hollywood film "Twelve Angry Men," "12 Citizens" tells the story of an adopted young man who murders his biological father. His adoptive parents are rich.

His fate is decided inside a virtual court case with a jury composed of 12 ordinary people.

According to renowned theater director Xu Ang, his inspiration for the 12 characters in the film were acquaintances in real life.

The China Movie Channel Media Awards category also awarded "Best Actress" to 29-year old Yang Zishan for her role in "Miss Granny." She shot to fame for starring in the film "So Young," which is the directorial debut of actor-turned-director Zhao Wei, according to CRIEnglish.

Last year, "12 Citizens" competed at the Ninth Rome Film Festival, becoming the sole Chinese film in the festival to be nominated for a top award, according to CNTV.

"The diversity of these characters represents my personal understanding of China, or to be more specific, the city of Beijing," Xu said. "These 12 people are based on people I have met. So the discrimination, conflict and argument in the film are probably real things I have experienced."
