R Kelly Kicked Off from Ohio Music Festival After Protests About His past

R&B singer R Kelly's headline slot at the Fashion Meets Festival in Ohio has been cancelled.

The decision to drop off the "Ignition" singer from the music festival was based on protests about past allegations linking him to child abuse.

Both the singer and the festival organizers have released statements to Columbus Alive to state the cancellation of his performance on August 29.

According to the festival organizers, "Fashion Meets Music Festival and headlining artist R Kelly have come to the mutual decision to cancel Kelly's upcoming performance at the inaugural Fashion Meets Music Festival."

Similarly, a statement was released by Kelly's publicist and said, "R Kelly is sorry to disappoint his fans, but looks forward to seeing them in the near future during one of his upcoming tours."

While the decision was deemed as "mutual", it was made after several protests against Kelly's performance at the event were made.

Folk rock band Saintseneca had been slotted to perform in the music festival but decided to cancel their performance. In a statement posted on their website, the band stated that "we feel [Kelly's] selection as a performer ignores his very serious allegations of sexual violence and assault".

Local radio station WCBE 90.5 FM has also dropped out from the event. According to Dan Mushalko, station manager, they made their decision after considering the feedback of their listeners and those of Columbus City Schools, their station's official license holders.

"Obviously, since they represent children and they represent teenagers, they didn't want us associated with the event if R. Kelly was a part of it," Mushalko said.

After taking into consideration the opinions of their listeners and the school district as well as their own internal ethics, Mushalko claimed, "You just can't do it".

Columbus Alive reported that the festival's organizers made the decision of cancelling Kelly's performance last July 25. No plans of replacing him have been made.

In 2008, the R&B singer was tried and acquitted for charges relating to child pornography.

His scene with Lady Gaga in her scrapped music video "Do What You Want" had been subjected to criticisms for being associated with rape.
