Wulagai in Inner Mongolia may be unheard of to many, but the grassland haven "on the edge of sky" is certainly a sight to behold and worth the long trip.

The grassland on the edge of sky

Called "the grassland on the edge of sky" by locals, Wulagai is located in the Xilin GolLeague. Inner Mongolia autonomous region is renowned for its prairies, and the spectacular scenery in Wulagai is one lowland a traveller should not miss.

The 5,000-kilometer-square grassland has a humble population of about 24,000. While Wulagai is less famous as compared to the other grasslands in the area, it is reportedly considered one of the most well-preserved areas in the region. It is also less crowded during the peak of the summer season, making it the perfect escape for the hustle and bustle of the city.

Herds in the distance look like white spots scattered along the vast green backdrop of mountains. Walking along the zigzagging Wulagai River--the 300 km river is among the longest in Inner Mongolia--the trek seems to be less rocky than it actually is. However, be prepared for a tough journey. You might even wish that the spirit of Genghis Khan will offer you more strength.

Weather

Mornings in Wulagai are slightly cold, even during summer, and unfriendly mosquitoes gather to attack. It is best to be prepared before setting off with long-sleeve shirts to protect yourself from the sunlight because the day quickly turns sunny and hot, and the boundless grassland immediately becomes brighter.

Activities

Hiking enthusiasts will enjoy a trek through Wulagai. A hiking event is held every June, beginning on the 29th. The hike involves more than 210 kilometers of space.

This year, five additional treks were scheduled until August, a first for the event.

For those not particularly enthused with sporting activities, the view is enough feast for the eyes.

The place is a dream for photo enthusiasts.

The place was even known for having caught the eye of French director Jean-Jacques Annaud, who shot his film "Wolf Totem" in the area.

"Wolf Totem" has been adapted from author Jiang Rong's hymn for the grasslands.  Earlier this year, the movie hit Chinese big screens, according to China Daily.

Wulagai's capital Xilinhot is also a sight to behold with wildflowers carpeted throughout the greenfields. The azure sky dotted with random-shaped clouds is the perfect backdrop for the vast road.

The paradise used to have wolves, but now it is difficult spotting them in the region.

There is also a traditional festival held by the Mongolian ethnic group in this majestic utopia.

The Nadaam festival is unlike others. It features exciting scenes such as horse racing, archery and the traditional Mongolian wrestling, also called "bokh."

Food

Locals are hospitable and will stimulate visitors' taste buds with roasted lamb paired with fine kumiss, which is made from horse milk in Mongolian yurts.

They also have dairy tofu called Horood. At first bite though, the must-try delicacy's texture might remind one of gum.

How to get there

The Liuliqiao Long-Distance Bus Station in Beijing has a direct bus to Wulagai. The bus ride usually takes 13 hours. A one-way ticket costs around US$61.

If long rides are not for you, then there is a flight from Beijing to Xilinhot available for about US$112, one way. From there, there will be a three-and-a-half-hour bus ride going to Wulagai.

Accommodation

A double room in Wulagai usually costs around US$32, though this price is subject to changes during the peak months.
