After a corruption probe on head security tsar and Politburo Standing Committee member Zhou Yongkang, Beijing announced that it will run after the 'dragons' in Shanghai.

A large team of investigators has arrived in China's most populous to scour its ranks. The team aims to identify corrupt officials and cleanse the city as part of Xi's anti-graft campaign that would run through September.

The commission did not specify any targets in Shanghai and has only stressed that promoting party discipline in the city. It would also include the province of Heilongjiang.

During the presidency of Hu Jintao, corrupt officials in Shanghai were investigated and successfully toppled the local leadership of Chen Lingayu, a Politburo member.

Chen was later incarcerated for 18 years after being found guilty of corruption and was replaced by reputed problem solver, Xi Jinping to lead the CPC in Shanghai. Chen's conviction have played a key role on President Xi's rise to power.

President Xi's actions toward former President Jiang's stronghold may be seen as a threat towards the latter's legacy as he still holds massive influence in the CPC despite being inactive after retiring in 2003.

Corruption probes have already targeted some of Jiang's close allies including Xu Caihou and Wang Zongnan.
