Qihoo and Xiaomi, China Wireless Router manufacturers, are at loggerheads surrounding a recent controversy regarding a new device with special setting for expecting mothers. While Qihoo introduced the device as an update to a previous version, why is Xiaomi opposing it?
According to a report on BBC, two of China's biggest technology firms are reportedly at loggerheads following the recent launch of a Wi-Fi router that comes with special settings for pregnant women. As per these settings, users can program the router to emit lesser radiation and thereby considerably reduce the risk of damage to the unborn fetus in the mother's womb. The two companies involved in the controversy are leading internet security provider Qihoo and smartphone maker Xiaomi.

Qihoo launched the device as an update to one of its existing models that comes with three settings, which are penetration, balance and "pregnant women." Users can conveniently set it to pregnant women and reduce the radiation being emitted. Another report on Locker Drome says that pregnant woman setting on Qihoo's router brings down the emitted radiation by almost 70 percent. These settings can be altered at a later stage.
Meanwhile, Xiaomi has called Qihoo's attempt a mere marketing tactic. Voicing its opposition against the Pregnancy Wi-Fi router, Xiaomi has resorted to social media platforms and is labeling the new launch as a marketing gimmick. They also go on to say that Wi-Fi usage is safe even during pregnancy and therefore cast a shadow of doubt over Qihoo's new device. It is a well-known fact that the two firms have been known as arch rivals in the region.
Additionally, Xiaomi's outburst against Qihoo comes shortly after its introduction of a new router device. Xiaomi's new router has six terabytes of storage and high-speed connections but it lacks the so called Pregnancy Wi-Fi feature.
Given the controversy surrounding the health issues caused due to the radiation emitted by such devices, Qihoo's new model clearly targets the health conscious users; however, the radiation from a regular Wi-Fi router is said to be of low-level. Since this radiation is non-ionising in nature, using it said not to cause any significant harm.
