Just a day following Marvel's announcement of the new Peter Parker in the person of Tom Holland, a slew of dissenting opinions flooded social media sites. Holland is a 19-year-old English actor who was tapped to replace American actor Andrew Garfield as New York's friendly web-slinger. His first appearance for the role will be in the 2016 movie "Captain America: Civil War," prior to his standalone film in 2017.

According to E! Online, fans are upset over several things. First, the casting of yet another white Spider-Man despite Marvel's recent introduction of the African-American-Latino Miles Morales as the new alter ego of the superhero. One name that popularly made it to the fantasy casting was actor Donald Glover, who goes by his rapper stage name Childish Gambino.
"I try not to criticize casting choices, but this is the perfect time for Miles Morales to enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe [sic]," E! quoted Twitter user Richard Whiting.
Second, fans find Holland's tender age rather uncomfortable and took a swipe at his juvenile looks. E! also quoted Twitter user Megan Busch who tweeted, "So is the new #SpiderMan going for a younger audience like the kind that can't even see a PG13 [sic] movie in theaters? Cause he looks that young."
Another Twitter user by the name of Josh Gad made a witty quip about the casting of the young Holland. He said, "At the rate that #SpiderMan is getting younger every film, Peter Parker will be a fetus by the time Avengers Infinity Wars is released."
There were also those who were completely unconvinced because of having never heard about Holland until Marvel's announcement. Irish Examiner cited one puzzled Twitter user named Wolfgang Rue, who posted, "Who is Tom Holland and why does he look 13[?]"
Still, quite a number of fans expressed their support or gave Holland the benefit of the doubt until he performs otherwise. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the young British actor bested other 1,500 actors from all over the world who auditioned for the role. The test screening was held secretly in Atlanta on May 30 and saw the demos of Asa Butterfield ("Ender's Game"), Judah Lewis, and Charlie Plummer.
