According to Voice of China on July 11th, British Economist Intelligence Unit just issued the 2013 Global Food Security Index. This is an annual report that consists of a set of indices from 107 countries. It measures food security across most of the countries of the world. What position will China be in the index? There are a thousand hamlets in a thousand people's eyes. Everyone has his or her own answer to the question.

Pessimists guess that China will rank among the last of 20% countries; Optimists say China will rank in the middle. Let's have a look at Economist Intelligence Unit's answer. Amazingly, China ranks in the position of 39% among all the countries. The report is based on the official data from World Health Organization, Food Agricultural Organization, the World Bank and other authorities. The 2013 Index expands on the 25 previously identified food security indicators to determine how two new factors, political corruption and urbanization, affect access to safe, nutritious and affordable food.
Additionally, the 2013 Index includes Singapore and Ireland in the 107-country comparison, designed to track progress, foster collaboration and create real world solutions to help feed the 9 billion people on Earth. Technically speaking, this rank is more credible than our feeling.
Compared to the previous year, China's place drops four, and ranks 42 in the 107 countries. Among which, China's food prices endurance ranked 47; China's food supply capacity ranked 41 and China's quality and security capabilities rank 43.
An invited expert of China's State Food and Drug Administration Sun Jiong talked about the rank. He said it reflected the current level of our country's food safety.
"Food safety is a worldwide problem. There is no zero-risk food in any countries. Developed countries have their food safety issues too. This rank reflects the normal condition of our country's food safety." Expert Sun said.
