‘Jurassic World' Continues to be Indominable; Spends Third Week at Top of Box Office

Dinosaurs continue to rule the box office as "Jurassic World" maintains its top position for a third week in a row, even managing to earn $500 million in the United States alone.

Although narrowly defeating Pixar's "Inside Out" who gained $52.1 million on its second week, the Daily Mail UK reports that "Jurassic World" earned $54.2 million on its third week, upping their North American box office total to more than $500 million. Sadly, the Seth McFarlane-helmed "Ted 2" earned a disappointing $32.9 million, putting it in third below a movie about a genetically modified dinosaur and feelings with feelings.

On its second week, "Inside Out" earned a total of $184.9 million. Entertainment Weekly reports that despite the animated film dropping 42 percent, this is the typical characteristic of Pixar movies, holding up fairly well week after week. The family-friendly movie "Max" opened at $12.2 million, which might seem little than the top four, but considering that it faced tough competition with "Inside Out," the numbers are pretty impressive.

Despite the Chris Pratt-starrer a few weeks shy of beating "The Dark Knight," Cinema Blend reports that "Jurassic World" is the fastest movie to hit the said mark. They also posed the question whether the dino-sequel will be able to chew through "Titanic," which grossed $658 million, or even the colossal record of $760 million from "Avatar."

From its first conception in 1993 to its most recent incarnation, the "Jurassic" franchise has always been a strong competitor when it comes to the box office. It would be great to see the sequel beat more box office records, though it is highly unlikely that it will defeat "Avatar." Overall, it is good to see the sequel restart the opus of Spielberg, and here is to hoping that if execs decide to greenlight another sequel, it does not go the way of the dinosaurs.
