Tom Cruise will once again rule the skies as he reprises his role as Maverick for Skydance Productions' "Top Gun 2."
During a "Terminator Genesys" press conference in Berlin, CEO of Skydance Productions David Ellison confirmed that a script is already being penned by Justin Marks, updating what the world of fighter pilots has become in today's world, CNN reports. Of course, no "Top Gun" movie would be complete without any of the old pilots, and albeit in a very vague manner, Ellison confirmed that Tom Cruise will be reprising his old role, stating "Maverick will play Maverick."

The fighter pilot industry is not the same thirty years ago when "Top Gun" was released, and Yibada reports that it is highly likely that the movie will revolve around the use of drones in the army. With this, it is highly logical that Maverick will be fighting for the right that pilots are indispensable despite the advancements in army tech.
This sequel has been in development since 2010, but reached an abrupt halt when "Top Gun" director Tony Scott passed away. Vulture adds that the movie will be released in IMAX and 3D, so fans of the original can expect an immersive movie that will take the audience to the skies, being one with the pilot and the plane during dogfights. Presumably, fans will be at the edge of their seats at every aerial feat the planes will do, be it an unmanned aircraft or a piloted jet fighter.
The longstanding production of this "Top Gun" sequel ended on a premature note, and by continuing what Tony Scott did seems like a plausible justice for his untimely death. Seeing how Tom Cruise is still goig strong with the "Mission: Impossible" franchise, it would be virtually impossible to put pencil him down as Maverick, but if the execs said that the same Maverick will be back, then all fans can do is hope that Cruise has some nostalgia left in him to get back on that fighter jet and fly into the danger zone.
