Team captain Ruoqi Hui said the Dominican team were quite young but had a lot of potential. They will be facing Italy on Sunday who "are experienced, strong and have the 'home factor' on their side." Hui said.
Brazil, the Olympic champion, proved their experience as they defeated host nation Italy in another shutout game at the Pala Serradmigni 25-21, 25-16, 25-15.
The Brazilians left no room for errors as Endres Jacqueline Pereira De Carvalho led her team in a lopsided match with 16 points, 14 coming from attacks and two from services. Veteran Fernanda Rodriques also proved her value to the team as she added 13 points from attacks.
Brazil will now face the Dominican Republic in Pool C of Division 1.
In other Division 1 matches, Russia continued its dominance at Pool A as they finished off Japan in four sets. The U.S.-Turkey match went the distance, with the latter prevailing in the two-hour-long match 21-25, 29-27, 21-25, 25-20, 12-15.
Pool B was a day for the Asian countries as South Korea defeated Germany in four sets with top scorer team captain Yeon-Koung Kim proving unstoppable at the net converting 19 attack points.
Thailand and Serbia had the most exciting game of the day as the 12th seeded Thais upset the 7th seeded Serbs in a grueling five setter 25-19, 18-25, 20-25, 25-19, 15-13 that lasted almost two hours.
