On Saturday, June 27, Mandopop superstar Jane Zhang staged the first leg of her "Bang the World" concert tour in Shanghai. While the event name suggests a massive series of shows across the globe, Zhang will only be performing in seven cities in China until the month of August.

Thousands of excited fans waved glow sticks in anticipation of the singer. In one of her production numbers, Zhang was seen in a white off-shoulder dress as she serenaded the audience with her version of John Legend's "All of Me." Her rendition of the English song was clear and effortless, to which fans enthusiastically sang along. Zhang also did not miss the chance to promote "Fighting Shadows," her first song created for an English-language movie. The pop star performed the "Terminator Genisys" promotional theme as she donned a black ball skirt and a skull-themed black crop top shirt with a hood that concealed her face.

Early in April, Zhang announced her nationwide concert tour to mark her 10 years in the music industry. The celebration of her decade-long career is also her way of setting a new starting point in her journey, she shared with Global Times

Zhang hailed from Chengdu, Sichuan province, and was raised by her mother. When she was in her early teens, her parents divorced, and her father died two years later. To help support her family, Zhang began singing at a local pub while continuing with her studies. She took an English course at Sichuan University's Foreign Language Department but had to stop to compete in Super Girl, according to Shanghaiist. In 2005, she won third place, and the national all-female singing competition, with more than 400 million viewers, became her shot at rising from her humble beginnings.

Today, her strong vocal prowess merited her a comparison with Mariah Carey and Christina Aguilera. Fans likened her whistle register to that of a dolphin and have since fondly called her "Dolphin Princess." Her impressively high pitch earned her applause from Oprah Winfrey and Simon Cowell at the World's Got Talent segment of "Oprah." To date, Zhang has won best female singer and best album more than 40 times in different Chinese music awards, China Daily reported.

The next of Zhang's concerts will be on July 4 in Changsa, Hunan province; July 11 in Wunan, Hubei province; July 18 in Fuzhou, Fujian province, July 25 in Shenzhen, Guangdong province; August 1 in Beijing; and August 8 in Dalian, Liaoning province.
