The Philadelphia Eagles signed offensive guard John Moffitt on Monday to a one-year contract, bringing back the former Denver Bronco from an early retirement in November 2013, as reported by the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The amount of the contract was undisclosed as the Eagles simultaneously released undrafted rookie Cole Manhart to open a spot for the former Wisconsin standout.

Moffitt, 28, was involved in drug possession and battery charges during his time away from the game. He was arrested in March of last year after he was caught in possession of cocaine, ecstasy, and marijuana.

In June 2014, he was arrested again and indicted of assault and public urination after allegedly being seen urinating at a parked car at the Bellevue Square mall in Washington.

In spite of this, the 6-foot-4, 319-pound enforcer managed to undergo formal rehabilitation in Malibu, California last November to try and straighten up his life. He pleaded guilty months before and were later dismissed of his drug charges before meeting with the Eagles, who gave him a second chance to rejuvenate his career, as per Bleacher Report.

Reports are out that Moffitt could possibly land a starting spot in Chip Kelly's offense even after his two-year departure from the competitive sport. It was reported that Kelly believes that he can "bring a lot to the table" and that the coach is keen on allowing him to show that he truly belongs in the league.

Philadelphia had recently released two of their starting guards, Evan Mathis and Todd Herremans, this summer, which could make Moffitt's dream of becoming a starter an impending reality, according to Yahoo Sports.

"I have never been so proud of a guy I've trained than I am of John Moffitt," his trainer Jay Glazer said. "Retired two years ago [because] he knew he had drug issues, took time to go to rehab, clean up his life, beat his demons and he has taken his life back."

Kelly is known to be fastidious when it comes to his player's character and commitment, which led some NFL analysts to believe that the veteran coach had seen something in Moffitt to deem him worthy of another shot at it.
