Wimbledon Update: Will John Isner Break his Longest Match Record?

John Isner's CV has yet to include a grand slam win. Expectations are high on the 30-year-old being the only American in the top 20. He is, after all, "the hope" since the retirement of Andy Roddick, Andre Agassi and the legend Pete Sampras. But Isner hasn't even reached the semifinals of a grand slam and the only notable performance he exhibited was at the US Open in 2011 where he lost in the quarterfinals. It wouldn't be fair to compare Isner to the retired greats, of course, but the good news is, Isner may be on his way to another record-breaking feat. And we're not talking about a grand slam win here.

At the 2010 Wimbledon Championships, Isner played an 11-hour, 5-minute match against Nicolas Mahut. The final score was a whooping 6-4, 3-6, 6-7(7-9), 7-6(7-3), 70-68 in favor of the 6"10 player. Play was suspended at 9:07 PM on a Tuesday but went on for the next two days with the last set ending at 8 hours and 11 minutes.

Five years later, the marathon man is back and he may be on his way to another record-breaking match. This time, his opponent is Marin Cilic, the Croatian who has never lost against the American in all their encounters. After playing for four hours and 15 minutes with a score of 7-6(4), 6-7(6), 6-4, 6-7(4), 10-10, play was suspended due to bad light.

It is predicted that the duration of the match may just break Isner's previous record and the only way for either player to win is to play his own game. But if Isner capitalizes on the weak points of Cilic and power his way through with his big serve, he may just have a big chance of entering the fourth round - his best Wimbledon performance yet.

The winner of the match will face Denis Kudla, the wild card who defeated Santiago Girardo of Colombia with a 6-2, 6-7(3), 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 win.

"It's my best Grand Slam result, and I couldn't be any happier right now. I'm riding the wave and hopefully I can push it further," said Kudla who is in his second Grand Slam week for the first time. "I have never come into a major playing this well with that many matches in a row. Grass being my favourite surface, I felt incredibly comfortable."
