John's father Henry was an upper class man who studied at Queen's College in Cambridge. He was named after his grandfather who was a noteworthy person in his own right.

His grandfather gathered a group of evangelical Christians that fought for the abolition of slavery, prison reforms and mission work.

During the 1880s, he invented the Venn diagram that he then called Eulerian Circles. The Venn diagram represents sets and their relationships.

This diagram is commonly used in fields like set theories, probability, logic, statistics and computer science.

Venn became a lecturer on moral science at Cambridge University. He taught logic and probability theory.

Venn died on April 4, 1923 from unspecified causes.

According to Google, their doodle for today creates two intersecting circles from the Os in the company logo allowing the viewers to create their own Venn diagram by selecting different categories.

Mike Dutton, one of the designers of the doodle, said that he sat down with two of their doodle engineers, Mark Ivey and Corrie Scalisi.

Dutton said they spent the Friday afternoon figuring out what kind of doodle to create. He said they threw around all kinds of ideas, some silly and some great.

The Google Doodle is displayed today in different Google browsers, which turned on as different timezones passed midnight.
