Plex, a media server, has recently disclosed the hacking incident on their forums and that some user information is in danger of being compromised.

According to PC Mag, the hacker was able to retrieve email addresses, passwords, private messages including IP addresses.  While encrypted passwords are hard to crack, Plex is making the necessary actions to protect any remaining information by temporarily shutting down its forums. Subscribers who have Plex.tv passwords should expect an email instructing them of further actions to protect their private information. As an assurance to its customers, Plex revealed that they do not keep records of customer credit cards and other financial information, assuring the public that  no other part of their system suffered.

In their blog post, Plex reminded their customers the importance of using a very strong password in order to keep their accounts secured and safe. Along with the prompt of securing a strong password, Plex issued an apology to its customers, promising an update on the issue as well as performing the necessary tasks to bring the service to its normal function. Plex co-founder Elan Feingold admitted that reversing hashes on the site's forum can eventually lead hackers to have access to Plex.tv. He also reminded anyone who uses the same password on their other accounts to immediately change it and strive to create a stronger password.

PC Mag also reinstated Reddit's post that the hacker has decided to put the information for payoff, fundamentally holding important information about Plex.tv. The hacker demanded an amount of $2,400 by July 3 and an increment of $ 1,270 for every delay on delivering the said amount. In his note on the Plex forum, the hacker said, "in the event that no BTC was received at the time given, the data will be released via multiple torrents and there will be no more Plex.tv." Although Feingold did not disclose any information about the ransom, he confirmed this by answering queries in their blog posts. He also encouraged users to use password managers such as Last pass and 1Password.
