Twitter will now celebrate the birthday of its members by decorating the tweet handle with balloons. The new feature has been introduced sinceJuly 6, in a desperate attempt to get more data for advertisers.

The microblogging site has been known to introduce new features at regular intervals to keep the audience engaged. The latest addition to Twitter's list of features includes the new birthday feature, as confirmed by Tech Firstpost. With this new feature, users will get an option to set their birthdate on their profile. Using the settings button, they can enter their birthdate to ensure that users get birthday greetings. Additionally, their twitter handle will also be decorated with balloons as a mark of celebration. The new feature has been introduced recently and is available to Twitter users; however, this setting is completely optional.

Moreover, Twitter confirmed that the privacy setting for the birthday, month and year are completely separate as this gives users more authority over the amount of information that they choose to share. While users will decide the visibility of the information that they share, Twitter will use it for marketing purposes. In a note on the microblogging portals support database, Twitter clearly states that it will use information like birth date to display more relevant content to the member.

Meanwhile, another report on Tech Crunch confirms that Twitter is introducing this new feature in an effort to get more data for its advertisers. Explaining the logic behind the move, the report states that Twitter ads are bound to be more effective once they are targeted towards individuals in the right age group. By using the Birthday Feature, Twitter is hoping to get more users to share their age information for its advertisers.

Earlier in 2010, Facebook also initiated a similar move where it encouraged users to fill in their biographical information. This worked for them and pushed their ad search engine to quite an extent. Now, Twitter is keen to repeat the same success story. Twitter has also recently launched its mobile ad manager.
