The six-foot-five former Portland Trailblazers shooting guard became an unrestricted free agent this July and was offered a four-year, $57 million deal by Mavs boss Mark Cuban. He verbally agreed to the terms last week, but speculations arose that he might also back out following the stunning change of heart by the seven-foot All-Defensive center.
NBA teams could only officially sign players starting July 9 after the league lifts its transactions moratorium and the Los Angeles Clippers, led by head coach Doc Rivers and superstars Chris Paul, Blake Griffin, and Paul Pierce, reportedly used the stall to stay at Jordan's house, persuading him to stay with the Clips.
The ploy worked and the two-time NBA rebounding leader signed the Clippers deal right at his own home.
Meanwhile, Sportsnet published an AP article reporting that Matthews already signed with the Mavericks on Thursday, right after the freeze was lifted.
Cuban was reportedly elated with the former Marquette standout's decision, telling Dallas fans that Matthews "is exactly the type of player we want in a Mavs uniform" adding that they "will love him."
As a result of Jordan's backpedal, the six-year veteran's contract was adjusted to $70 million for four years, an increase of $13 million as per SB Nation's Tim Cato.
Cuban and the Mavs are reportedly making a huge gamble on Matthews' deal as he would be coming off an Achilles injury, which Cato said is the "worst muscle injury a player can suffer in sports." It is also widely perceived that a player who suffers from such injury would never perform the same way again, but it remains to be seen with the outside shooter.
However, the gamble might pay off for Dallas as Matthews was never known to be a slashing type of player but always plays on the outside, thriving on his accurate shooting rather mixing it up inside.
The real problem now for Cuban is how to fix the gaping seven-foot hole in the middle of the Mavs roster. With star center Tyson Chandler signed with the Phoenix Suns also on Thursday, the team is left with undersized centers Amar'e Stoudemire, Bernard James, and Greg Smith.
