According to PC Mag, Microsoft has confirmed its plans to get rid of the Photosynth app. Microsoft believes that the app is not very popular and removing it from the list will make space for more innovations. The technology company has confirmed a similar fate for several other unpopular MSN apps.
What's more is that the app was discontinued with immediate effect and no developer support will be available; however, Microsoft has clarified that those using the app may still continue to use it, but hereon, they would be on their own as the company discontinues all support.
The company's statement on the Photosynth website explains the reason for this move, saying that the new Photosynth preview technology was better than the spherical views that the app produce. Therefore, discontinuing it was in the best interest of the users.
On its part, Microsoft said that it would continue to support apps that have a broader user appeal, as confirmed by The Verge. Other apps to face the axe include MSN Food & Drink that will disappear on Sept. 28, along with the MSN Travel app. MSN Health & Fitness will last a bit longer, but it will also cease to exist starting November 1. The travel apps were used to provide extra information about flight plans, upcoming destinations, etc.
Those who are using these apps will be notified regarding the discontinuation of the features.as confirmed by The Verge. So far, there is no clarity on how these discarded apps will see a new life in any of the other Microsoft ventures. For instance, the health and fitness parts could be integrated into the separate health app by Microsoft. The company also said that this move was aimed at regulating the business practices and evaluating the overall momentum.
