Despite the fact that these yellow oversized Tic-Tacs are annoying as hell, they did manage to overrun everyone on the US box office, acquiring themselves a doozy-inducing $115 million on its first weekend alone.
The North American box office has been quite busy as of late, and the release of "Minions" just made everything better for Universal. According to the Miami Herald, the "Despicable Me" prequel garnered $115.2 million on its opening, displacing "Inside Out" and putting the animated feature in third. The immovable "Jurassic World" stayed at second, already on its fifth week grossing $18.1 million.

This is good news for Universal Studios since "Minions" topping the box office means it is their third movie to reach the $100 million mark, with "Furious 7" being the first and "Jurassic World" being the most recent. Entertainment Weekly also reported that the movie is the second animated film to reach $100 million on opening. Though it is the fourth animated flick to do so, it only bested "Shrek 2" and "Toy Story 3" that got $108 million and $110.3 million, respectively, but not "Shrek the Third," which holds the record of $121.6 million.
The applause it is receiving as of the moment is much expected since the studio did engage on different partnerships, with Bloomberg reporting that the various partners delivering around $593 million, from sponsors such as Amazon.com Inc., Comcast, General Mills Inc., McDonald's Corp., and Snapchat Inc., among others, to produce an extraordinary amount of publicity for the movie.
The movie is still in theatres, and there is still a lot of time and publicity for "Minions." However, the record that "Jurassic Park" has made as one of the longstanding movies as of late is still to be defeated, and since it is the middle of summer, moviegoers need to be prepared for the upcoming movies from all the different studios.
