American pugilist Keith Thurman called out Floyd Mayweather Jr. immediately after retaining his WBA welterweight belt on July 11 via an 8th round TKO victory over former welterweight champ Luis Collazo at the USF Sundome in Florida.

ESPN's Dan Rafael indicated that the fight was stopped by referee Telis Assimenios "one second into the eighth" following Collazo's claim that he could not see due to a cut caused by an accidental head butt over his right eye.

Thurman (26-0-0-1, 22 KOs), who remained undefeated and had just successfully defended his regular WBA crown in two consecutive fights, challenged Mayweather (48-0, 26 KOs) during the post-fight in-ring interview saying that he is "a young, strong champion" and daring the pay-per-view king to take his "0", referring to his same unblemished record.

However, his win was not seen as convincing enough by most boxing analysts to even give him the right to share the ring with Mayweather.

Thurman ran around in the fifth canto after being badly hurt when Collazo caught him with a brutal shot to the body. He looked really damaged at the end of the round but endured to fight on until the unfortunate clash of heads in the seventh.

Boxing News 24's Dan Ambrose said that the fight did not do anything to convince the fans and the media that the Clearwater native is worthy to be Floyd's final opponent on September.

Ambrose suggested that with his performance last Saturday, he could have been thrashed by the likes of Amir Khan, Marcos Maidana, Shawn Porter, Adrien Broner, Danny Garcia, or Errol Spence. The article then said that based on Thurman's last three fights against Leonard Bundu, Robert Guerrero, and Collazo, he does not stand a chance against the pound-for-pound champion.

With his mediocre showing against Collazo, it seems like Thurman is more concerned about landing a huge payday than actually beating Money.

Meanwhile, Yahoo Sports' Joe Garza reported that Thurman suffered a left hand injury while training for the fight, which could have affected his game on fight night.

One thing is clear about Thurman as exposed by the match, though: he is not yet ready of getting hit hard and he is having problems against precise punchers.

While Mayweather has never been known as a hard-hitter, he is arguably the most accurate puncher in the history of the sport.
