Did you know that sunbathing is more dangerous than driving cars? Well, a new study conducted by AURA, a spray tan company, revealed that basking under the heat of the sun can cause twice as many deaths than traffic accidents.

Based on research, skin experts warned that more people are dying because of skin cancer or melanoma. The supposition was made after they compared death rate statistics compiled in 12 countries where skin cancer deaths are significantly higher than car accidents.

Among the 12 nations, which include Australia, Ireland, U.K., New Zealand and Germany, Australia stood out as the country with the highest death rate of skin cancer at 71 percent compared to car accidents. AURA also highlighted that skin cancer mortality may be much higher since the data did not include skin cancer types like basal and squamous cell carcinoma, Techie News has learned.

The recent study also revealed the worrying increase in number of women that use tanning beds or sunbeds. As per previous studies, experts have already warned the public about the adverse effects on the skin linked to using sunbeds, which are hotter than the midday Mediterranean sun.

Artificial tanning is one of the major causes for melanoma, which is the second most common form of cancer found in women between 20 to 30 years old. That's why experts stressed its harmful effects.

"Regardless the exact ratio, it is evident that skin cancer is a very relevant cause of death," AURA stated. "If you reflect at the mere numbers, you feel that when compared to traffic safety, skin safety is treated absolutely disproportionally in our daily lives."

Moreover, skin experts have also notified the public about the latest summer trend based on social media - sunburn art. Though the results are undeniably incredible, sunburn art is riskier than its fashionable benefits, The Silver Ink revealed.

The new online fad, sunburn art, which is a type of body art made by exposing certain body parts to the sun without additional protection. The result? Well, a sunburn in the shape of a particular image, design or pattern.

As this trend continues to grow, The Skin Cancer Foundation intensely warns people to avoid sunburns by any means. They also added that sunburn does not only cause pain but is extremely dangerous, Daily Herald reported.

"Sunburns cause DNA damage to the skin, accelerate skin aging, and increase your lifetime skin cancer risk," Skin Cancer Foundation stated. "In fact, sustaining five or more sunburns in youth increases lifetime melanoma risk by 80 percent. On average, a person's risk for melanoma doubles if he or she has had more than five sunburns."

Aside from sunbathing and sunburns, sunscreen ignorance may also be responsible for the rising cases of skin cancer worldwide.
