Colorado Democrats Seek To End Fracking Fights

Colorado's fracking-friendly governor initiated groups to drop their ballot proposals in order to avoid a fracking fight over gas and oil drilling.
Gov. John Hickenlooper (D-CO) announced a ceasefire at the state capitol on Monday morning and with him was Rep. Jared Polis (D-CO) who helped finance two initiatives to limit hydraulic fracturing, or fracking as it is termed.

Polis agreed to call his proposals off and two groups who had their pro-fracking proposals are now going to be terminated.
One of the proposals laid down by Polis is to increase distance between rigs and homes from 500 feet to 2,000 feet.
Another method is to allow the local government to implement stricter laws on drilling.
Democrats had been worrying about the negative impact and implications brought about by the ballot-battle over drilling to them, while Republicans are favoring development of gas and oil that can boost GOP turnout.
According to Hickenlooper, in order to avoid ballot fight, a task force comprised of 18 members is needed. They will be responsible to issue recommendations to the Colorado Legislature next year aiming to minimize conflicts between companies in the energy industry and the Colorad residents.
Polis agreed to the solution of Hickenlooper and said that it would be a victory for the people of Colorado if they are safeguarded against fracking.
Fracking requires blasting mixtures of sand or gravel, water and chemicals into rock formations underground that will then release trapped gas and oil underneath the soil.
Rep. Frank McNulty (R-CO), who pushed for the prevention of revenue collection of revenue from drilling and fracking, said that the unravelling events are more constructive when compared to debates in the previous months.
The deadline for the groups to turn in their ballots had started on Monday and will continue until September 5.
