Jonnie Williams, the star witness of Virginia Governor Bob Mcdonnell and his wife's corruption trial, completed his testimony on Monday with the defense questioning the his honesty in the case.

Gov. McDonnell and his wife, Maureen, are facing the possible jail time if convicted. The couple allegedly accepted over US$165,000 worth of gifts and loans from Williams in exchange for the promotion of the products of his nutraceutical company, Star Scientific Inc, NBC Washington reported.

The defense team cross-examined Williams, who testified under immunity on Monday. Henry Asbill, McDonnell's attorney, continued to question if the key witness was indeed telling the truth when he related his transactions with the governor.

According to Williams' testimony, in one of his meetings with McDonnell, the governor opened the possibility of granting access to money by arranging a stock transfer to avoid paper trail. When Asbill mentioned that the governor talked with his stockbroker after the meeting, Williams said he decided in the end to just write a check to make the transaction easier.

Asbill also questioned William's claim that he was giving the McDonnells checks to help promote Anatabloc, the flagship product of Star Scientific. When asked to give a specific example of the benefits he received from the governor after the delivery of the check, Williams said the McDonnells allowed him to use their mansion for a promotional event for Anatabloc.

Williams also testified that at Christmas 2012, McDonnell sent him a photo via text message of himself holding up a Rolex watch. The star witness claimed he bought the watch for Maureen to give to her husband as a present. Asbill then brought up his phone records to show that he did not receive any text from McDonnell on that day.

Earlier, Maureen's attorney said that the governor's wife had a "crush" on Williams and was made to believe that he had feelings for her. Williams denied that he had any romantic and physical relationship with the governor's wife and said he never knew about any tension in the McDonnell's marriage.

At the conclusion of the cross examination, Asbill remarked, "What you did wrong was to misjudge [Bob McDonnell's] integrity. What he did wrong was to misjudge you."

After Williams gave his testimony, McDonnell's former adviser Phil Cox testified that Maureen tried to promote Anatabloc to Ann Romney during the presidential campaign of Mitt Romney.

The former Star Scientific CEO detailed that Maureen requested a Manhattan shopping spree worth US$20,000, the Rolex watch and a US$50,000 loan to deal with the couple's financial problems. He added that the governor later asked for another loan worth US$20,000.

At the conclusion of Williams' testimony, Prosecutor Michael Dry asked him about the possibility of no conviction even if he told the truth, The Roanoke Times reported.

Williams only answered, "That's the law. That's the justice system."
