Frank Marasco is a senior student majored in Film and Television Production in Boston University. Before he graduated from the school, Frank and 10 other American students attended a program named " 2013 the view of China summer DV program". In this half a month program, they need to make a 10 minutes video based on their interest. They can observe the development of China nowadays and express the difference of China and America.
" I have this idea is because I found out that almost all the Chinese girl use umbrella or sun cream during the whole summer time. They want to protect themselves far from the sun. Contrary, we American students think tan is much more attractive. We are eager to go to the beach or grassland to make ourselves tan." Frank said.
Why there is a huge difference between Chinese girl and American girl in this case? There are two main reasons reveal after Frank's research: man and tradition.
Frank said that the majority of American men he talked with adore girl with tan. They think this is more energetic, sexy and sunny.
The coworker, a girl named Dan Jiang from Beijing Normal University, who helped Frank to finish "Fun in the Sun" said Chinese men always say they don't care about the color of women's skin, " But I think they didn't tell the truth. They prefer fair."
Frank has his own opinion about this topic. He said " I think if a girl is beautiful, the color of her skin is not so important for me. I adore girls who are confident. That's why I think it's funny there's a difference like this. I just want to make this video for fun, not a so serious research."
This is Frank's first time come to Beijing, China. He learned the traditional Chinese style about Beijing through books and movies. He thought only after you walk into the culture and live there for a while, you can understand the culture. In this process, he found many other interesting differences.
"Different region and different language. The same tool and the same vein. The same wood speaks and the same expectation." This is the introduction of one video " The Wood Speaks" made by Ian Reddick. He chose this topic because he known how carpenter works in America and he wanted to know how carpenter builds Chinese building. To his surprise, even though they are two totally different styles, the ways to build the house are similar.
Opposite to finding difference between America and China, Ian prefer to find some similarities. To him, the biggest difference is America is a young fresh country but China is an old China. But both of them use the same modern tools.
Not only Frank and Ian, every American student in this program has a masterpiece. They are interested in traditional Chinese culture. Molly Forman, a 22 years old student, focuses on Beijing Opera. She said, the first thing she think about Beijing is Beijing Opera. The make up, dress and actions are so attractive for her.
This program is held by Beijing Normal University. And this is the third year.
The manager of this program said: this is the first time for the American students come to China. They knew little about this country. They can't imagine that China also has a huge and modern airport. They thought Chinese know Kongfu.
This is also the first time for Sam Kauffmann, the leader teacher of Boston University, come to China. He thinks this is a program full of challenge for the students. "You need to finish a video in a new country and you even cannot speak the local language. This is a tough part. " He said.
He thinks it's huge challenge for Chinese government to take care of a huge population of people. China can make the world better.
