Cops said the baby's mother dropped him off at SoHo Child Care Monday morning saying she'll be back to feed Karl with breast milk from a bottle she left there.
Day care owner, Maryellen Strautmanis, instead fed Karl, tried, but was unsuccessful in burping the baby before putting him down for a nap. According to her, the boy was fussy for almost 10 minutes and then went quiet. When she went to check on him 15 minutes later however, she found him unresponsive with his lips already the shade of blue.
Strautmanis tried to perform CPR on the baby, but was unfortunately inexperienced with the procedure so she called 911.
A 911 call was reportedly placed at 12:13 p.m. and both emergency medical technicians and workers attempted to resuscitate Karl. The baby later was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
The facility owner told authorities that she has four employees, all of whom are not trained in CPR. "I am more dedicated than ever as I see, over and over, what a great beginning school experience does to a child's confidence level and ability to succeed," Strautmanis, who operated the day care in a second floor apartment, wrote in a statement.
Medical examiners who are investigating the baby's death said Karl showed no signs of bruises, trauma or an airway obstruction. He was believed to have died of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
Meanwhile, authorities discovered that the child care facility has been operating without a license. Despite the city regulations that limit group day care center to only 12 kids according to the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, there were reportedly 14 children excluding Karl at the SoHo Child Care at the time of the incident, Pop Sugar reported.
"We are saddened and concerned about this infant death and are working closely with law enforcement and ACS on an investigation," the New York City Administration of Children's Services stated.
The SoHo Child Care was shut down and served with a cease-and-desist order following Karl's death, as per the New York Post.
Maryellen Strautmanis was neither charged nor arrested for the baby's death. She will however be fined for running an unlicensed day care.
