Amid words of praises and congratulations surrounding Caitlyn Jenner's Arthur Ashe Courage Award, her recognition came with as much criticism.

In February, Jenner figured in a Malibu car accident that claimed the life of one woman. Now in the heat of the ESPY awards and the honor given to Jenner, one of those involved in the fatal car crash Jessica Steindorff spoke to ET Online, criticizing the ESPY Award.

"I find it difficult to understand how the culture we live in can honor a person who is responsible for taking a life and injuring several others with both an award and a reality show," she told the entertainment news site.

Steindorff further added, "I would hope that someone who seems to greatly value the importance of human existence would be more sensitive to the fact that she ended another person's life. Sadly we are living in a tabloid society."

In the lawsuit filed by Steindorff, she described Jenner as causing the collision because she was driving "negligently, carelessly, recklessly and wantonly."

After the accident in February, Jenner issued a statement saying she was devastated by the tragedy, "I cannot pretend to imagine what this family is going through at this time. I am praying for them," The Washington Post learned.

Director Peter Berg also took to social media hours before Jenner received the award. He posted a meme on his Instagram detailing how many war veterans actually commit suicide every day but explaining he was not attacking Jenner but had hoped to shed light on the issue of war vets not getting the appropriate honor, the Daily Mail reported.

Earlier on Thursday morning, Berg also posted a first meme on his Instagram featuring double amputee war vet Colonel Gregory D. Gadson, with the caption, "One Man traded 2 legs for the freedom of the other to trade 2 balls for 2 boobs. Guess which Man made the cover of Vanity Fair, was praised for his courage by President Obama and is to be honored with the 'Arthur Ashe Courage Award' by ESPN?"
