After being down 0-2, Team Australia is on to the semifinals of the Davis Cup after Lleyton Hewitt defeated Aleksandr Nedovyesov of Kazakhstan with the score of 7-6(2), 6-2, 6-3. The tour veteran needed two hours and two minutes to topple the 28-year-old in straight sets, extending his singles rubbers match record to 42-14.

"We had to rally together and find a way to get the win," Hewitt said as reported by BBC. "I've always said some of my greatest wins are in Davis Cup and some of my toughest losses are in Davis Cup so I'm going to enjoy this one. This is what dreams are made of."

Hewitt secured the 3-2 win for Australia after Sam Groth beat Mikhail Kukushkin 6-3, 7-6(6), 4-6, 7-6(6) earlier in the day to tie the score at 2-2. Groth was appointed by team captain Wally Masur to replace Nick Kyrgios who lost to world No. 115  Aleksandr Nedovyesov on Friday. Masur understood Kyrgios' struggle and decided to bench the 20-year-old.

"That's no different to being physically exhausted after a big month or a big match. It takes its toll," Masur said told The Washington Post. "I kind of feel sorry for Nick in a way because it was almost a little bit of hysteria about some of the stuff that went on at Wimbledon. The press cycle just kind of went into overdrive."

Groth, meanwhile, had an impressive Davis Cup weekend winning his first doubles match on Saturday with Hewitt and firing 65 winners and 29 aces to secure the match against Kukushkin. He was picked by Masur after a notable grass court season by winning the Aegon Manchester Trophy and reaching the third round at Wimbledon before losing to Roger Federer.

In other Davis Cup news, Team Canada, who entered the tie without their top players Milos Raonic and Vasek Pospisil, went down 0-3 against Belgium after Ruben Bemelmans and Kimmer Coppejans defeated Toronto natives Daniel Nestor and Adil Shamasdin with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 win.

Nestor, a former no. 1 player in doubles, said that the return of serve of the Belgians played a critical role in their win against a team that struggled to capitalize on opportunities.

"They hit some really quality returns. We'd win points if we hit great serves but if we didn't start the point strong their return game was better than ours," Nestor told Sportsnet.

Despite the loss, two more matches will be played to close out the tie - Ontario native Frank Dancevic will face world no. 14 David Goffin and Filip Peliwo of Vancouver will play Steve Darcis.
