A New Hope: Indirect Israel-Palestine Talks Started in Cairo

Indirect talks between Palestinian and Israeli representatives are taking place in Cairo, Egypt after weeks of non-stop violent conflict between the two parties.

The talks came after a four-week conflict in Gaza that claimed 1,900 lives.

Egyptian mediators are now relaying the demands from each side of the two delegations.

Palestinian delegation includes Hamas negotiators and members of the Palestinian Authority. However, the negotiators from the Israeli delegation remain unidentified.

According to reports, part of Palestinian demands include the reopening of border crossings and the ending of Israel's territorial blockade.

Mark Regev, Israeli government spokesman, said that Israel focuses on longer term deals that will demilitarize Gaza to achieve sustained periods of peace between the two warring factions.

According to BBC's Kevin Connolly, both sides are showing signs that the ceasefire will last. Israel is re-opening souther road and rail routes that people can now move freely.

However, Izzat Rishq, a senior Hamas official, said that they will take the life of anyone who would try to take their weapons.

The 72-hour truce is now on its second day and by far the longest ceasefire since the violent conflict started last July 8.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said they are urging both Israelis and Palestinians to take advantage of the ceasefire to broaden their negotiations and come up with a better solution for the problem.

He said the ceasefire could open doors for the two parties to consider a two-state solution from which both countries can benefit.

Meanwhile, many residents in the Gaza Strip who were affected making the most out of the truce and have been returning to their homes.
